40% construction sites fines Rs 56 lakh, these rules were ignored

27 Nov 2023

The issue of pollution has taken a severe form in Pune District for a long time. To reduce this, PCMC has imposed a fine of Rs 56 lakh on 40% of the construction sites.

PCMC's ongoing efforts to combat air pollution involve the formation of 32 squads across 16 wards, targeting 1,500 construction sites contributing to the rising pollution levels.

In November, 1,401 inspections were carried out, resulting in notices being issued to 625 site owners for rule violations. A fine of Rs 56,09,104 has been collected. Violations included the absence of 35ft to 25ft long tin shades covering construction buildings, lack of green netting, and inadequate water sprinklers, among others. Some construction sites, despite prior warnings, faced fines for non-compliance, with several sites penalized more than once.

Despite notices and fines, if these sites fail to implement measures to uphold air quality, construction work may be halted.
