Amnesty Scheme to Reduce Stamp Duty Deficit

02 Dec 2023

If stamp duty defaulters from the period between 1980 and 2020 clear their dues in the next two months, their penalties will be reduced.

The government identified the defaulters during the audit, and now, an amnesty scheme has been introduced for them, providing exemption in stamp duty and penalties.

Most defaulters are from Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and Nagpur. The government expects to receive Rs 3,000 crore if the defaulters clear their dues.

The payment period in the Amnesty scheme will be in two phases: December 1, 2023, to January 31, 2024, and February 1 to March 31.

Under this scheme, those who have received notices earlier but did not pay due to the high amount will also benefit. Additionally, those who did not register their old documents due to heavy penalties will be able to avail themselves of the benefits of this scheme. This scheme will also help validate old documents.
