Balewadi Residents Fear Demolition After Alleged Land Record Alteration

25 Mar 2025

Residents of two cooperative housing societies in Balewadi are facing uncertainty over their access road, which was mistakenly marked as private property by a land surveyor. The societies claim that the Land Records Office (LRO) altered land records to benefit a private landowner, leading to fears that the road may be demolished or restricted in the future. The issue arose when a surveyor conducted a boundary-marking exercise without consulting the residents, incorrectly recording the road as part of a neighboring private property instead of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) land. The societies, legally established with necessary approvals since 2007 and 2010, had no prior land disputes until this sudden alteration. Complaints were immediately filed, highlighting the mistake that transferred the road from PMC’s jurisdiction to private ownership, potentially affecting 60 families.

Concerned that this was not a clerical error but a deliberate attempt at land-grabbing, the societies have lodged formal complaints with the LRO, demanding an investigation into possible corruption. Society office-bearers insist that the land boundaries were manipulated and have urged senior officials to reassess the maps using historical survey records, Google Maps, and partition documents. The societies are also seeking intervention from the settlement commissioner and have requested an on-site inspection by PMC to ensure the road remains a public asset. Since PMC acquired the road in 2008, residents are pushing for swift action to prevent any legal complications that could impact their homes and access rights.
