Building Approvals in Pune Double in Five Years, PMC Records ₹2,600 Crore Revenue

03 Apr 2025

The number of building permissions granted in Pune has more than doubled over the past five years, with 1,270 new building plans (3,359 including revised approvals) sanctioned in FY 2024-25. This marks a steady rise from 1,123 approvals in 2023-24, 1,039 in 2022-23, 824 in 2021-22, and just 579 in 2020-21. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials attribute this surge to increasing demand for redevelopment projects, a rise in migration due to job opportunities—particularly in the IT sector—and the introduction of faster approval software. The implementation of a GPS-based dashboard has also streamlined processes, reducing delays and improving governance, according to citizens' group Aamhi Punekar.

Despite this growth, urban planners warn that without proportional improvements in civic infrastructure like water supply and sewage systems, rapid real estate expansion could strain the city. Experts emphasize that development should be balanced, especially in high-density zones near public transport hubs like the Metro. Meanwhile, the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, saw construction approvals for 26.63 million sqm, up from 22.33 million sqm the previous year. Notably, the building permissions department emerged as the highest revenue-generating wing of the PMC for the second consecutive year, surpassing the property tax department by collecting a record ₹2,600 crore.
