CEC to Deliver Report on Balbharati-Paud Phata Road Project Amid EC

16 Apr 2024

The Supreme Court-notified Central Empowered Committee (CEC) members are set to submit a report on the Balbharati-Paud Phata Road project by May following extensive hearings and inspections conducted over the past week. Collaborating with Pune Municipal Corporation officials on April 12, the CEC visited the site alongside concerned residents to evaluate the necessity of the road and the preservation of the local ecosystem. The committee aims to consider inputs from both the corporation and residents before reaching a consensus, emphasising the importance of balancing development needs with environmental concerns.

During the visit, approximately 30 residents expressed their concerns about preserving the existing ecosystem, particularly emphasising the significance of the local "tekdi." Despite the corporation's insistence on the road's necessity to address traffic issues along Law College Road, residents, including representatives from Oikos for Ecological Services, raised apprehensions about potential environmental impacts. Discussions highlighted concerns about the road's proposed elevation using pillars, which could disrupt natural aquifers, alongside discrepancies in the corporation's project presentations. Additionally, residents questioned whether the road traversed through reserve forest land, prompting clarification from the chief conservator of forests, who confirmed that no permissions were required as the area did not fall under reserve or private forest jurisdiction.
