Central Government Urges Swift Progress in Punes River Rejuvenation Project with JICA Collaboration

31 Aug 2023

The Central Government has urged the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to accelerate its collaborative river rejuvenation initiative with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). In a recent project review meeting, additional municipal commissioner Ravindra Binwade briefed authorities on the progress, revealing that the PMC is in the process of constructing 11 sewage treatment plants (STPs) as part of the JICA project. The objective of the river rejuvenation endeavor is to restore the cleanliness of the Mula-Mutha riverbed, which has suffered from untreated sewage disposal. Binwade noted that despite a 15% completion of the project, only an estimated ₹215 crore has been expended out of the central government's ₹841 crore contribution, leading to a cost increase from the initial ₹990 crore estimation to ₹1,473 crore due to delays spanning almost six years.

The PMC's ambitious plan involves the construction of sewage treatment plants strategically placed to collect sewage from various locations across the city. The dire need for these STPs arises from the current inadequacy of the city's sewage treatment infrastructure, causing a significant portion of generated sewage to directly contaminate the river water. The new STPs aim to rectify this situation by collecting 100% of the sewage, ensuring that only treated water is released into the river, thereby rejuvenating the Mula-Mutha river's ecosystem. The financial support from both the Central Government and JICA underscores the commitment to this vital project, though delays have led to increased costs. As the PMC strives to expedite the construction and operationalization of these STPs, the project's success holds the potential to significantly enhance the environmental health of the river and the region it serves.
