Safety inspections for the Metro’s Civil Court-Swargate underground stretch have begun, signalling the possibility of the service becoming operational by September. A team from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) is currently inspecting the tunnels, tracks, and underground stations at Swargate, Mandai, and Kasba Peth. This stretch marks the final section of the Metro’s Phase-I project, with the rest of the network already functional. Upon receiving CMRS approval, the Metro’s coverage will expand to 33 km across Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.
The entire inspection and certification process by CMRS is expected to conclude by mid-September, after which the government will decide on the commencement of services. With the state assembly election code of conduct anticipated soon, there is a push to open the Swargate stretch promptly. Regular commuters hope the Metro will be operational before Ganeshotsav, allowing many devotees to utilise the service. Additionally, there is a growing demand for the Metro to extend its operating hours until midnight during the 10-day festival to ease road congestion, particularly in the city’s central areas.
