As incessant rains continue to lash the ghat areas of Pune district, the Lonavala dam has witnessed a substantial increase in its water level, currently standing at 86% of its capacity. Anticipating further rainfall, officials are making preparations to initiate water discharge into the Indrayani river.
According to official data, the catchment area of the Lonavala dam recorded around 109 mm of rainfall in the past 25 hours. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has taken cognizance of the situation and has issued a red alert for the ghat areas of Pune district for today, signifying the likelihood of continued heavy rainfall.
As of now, the Lonavala dam is holding 9.98 TMC of water, with a capacity to accommodate approximately 1.74 TMC more before reaching its maximum limit. In view of the heavy rain alert, authorities are expecting the dam to fill up rapidly, necessitating the potential release of excess water into the Indrayani river.
As a precautionary measure, citizens residing in the vicinity of the Indrayani river have been advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions, as the water discharge from the Lonavala dam into the river is expected to commence shortly.
