Decades-Long Traffic Bottleneck on Hadapsar-Kharadi Road Finally Resolved Overnight

20 Aug 2023

A longstanding issue spanning three decades involving a 200- metre roadblock between Mundhwa Chowk and Mundhwa Railway Bridge has finally been resolved. The obstruction had been a persistent cause of severe traffic congestion, prompting residents to bring their grievances to the attention of authorities. Despite repeated complaints, the road remained obstructed. However, the municipal administration has now taken decisive action, effectively dismantling this roadblock on the Hadapsar-Kharadi road within a single night. Commencing at 11 pm on Friday, the endeavour was successfully completed by 6 am on Saturday. This uncharacteristic promptness by the municipal corporation has garnered commendation for accomplishing the task within such a short timeframe. Around 1991-92, Hadapsar and Kharadi areas transitioned from an agricultural zone to a developmental plan. A contention emerged due to perceived inadequacies in the compensation provided to landowners during this transformation. Consequently, road widening initiatives were stymied. However, due to persistent traffic congestion issues, efforts to expand the road gained momentum over the past few months. Negotiations with landowners resulted in an agreement, paving the way for the administration to initiate covert work on the road starting at 11 pm on Friday, aimed at minimising disruption. The collaborative effort of multiple departments including land acquisition, electricity, encroachment removal, Hadapsar and Mundhwa ward offices, as well as the construction department, under the coordination of the road department, ensured efficient execution. By 6 am, the boundary wall had been demolished, steps were cleared, stalls and sheet sheds were removed, and previously blocked areas were opened. The Electricity Department orchestrated the installation of streetlights, while local police provided security during the operation. During this operation, the PMC Additional Commissioner  and Superintending Engineer of the Road Department remained on-site throughout the night to oversee and facilitate the work. Additional Commissioner remarked, “The road between Mundhwa Chowk and Mundhwa Railway Bridge, constituting a 24-metre stretch on the Hadapsar-Kharadi road, had been obstructed for several years. The municipal administration engaged in discussions with the landowners, secured possession of the land, and remarkably accomplished the road’s construction within a single night. This achievement has yielded an additional 10 feet of space on both sides of the road.
