Declining Storage in Bhama Askhed Dam, Water Cuts Deferred for the Time Being

11 Apr 2024

The Bhama Askhed dam, a crucial water source for the eastern parts of the city, will halt discharge to downstream areas and weirs within a week due to a sharp decline in its water stock. Currently at 32% of its total capacity (2.5 TMC) compared to 50% (3.9 TMC) last year, officials from the irrigation department stated that this action is necessary, though it won't impact the city's water supply directly, as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will continue to receive water from the dam. The low water levels are attributed to insufficient rainfall last monsoon, leading to releases to fill downstream barrages for rural areas and farms, which will cease within the week.

Despite assurances of adequate water reserves by the state irrigation department and PMC officials, residents in the eastern parts of the city are experiencing water scarcity. PMC has responded by deploying tankers to affected areas to alleviate the situation, while civic officials assure that they are closely monitoring the dam's water levels and have made provisions to meet water requirements until July.
