Demand for Single-Window Clearance Grows Among 500 Housing Societies Planning Self-Redevelopment

15 Mar 2024

Around 500 cooperative housing societies in Maharashtra, predominantly from Pune, Mumbai, and Thane, have expressed interest in self-redevelopment, awaiting a streamlined single-window system to expedite approvals. Despite a significant demand from societies over 30 years old in major metro cities, progress has been hindered by the need to obtain clearances from various departments. Although a government resolution was issued in 2019 proposing a single-window system and subsidised loans, the initiative remains largely unimplemented, leaving housing societies grappling with bureaucratic hurdles.

Efforts to ease the process, such as the proposed single-window system announced by the housing department in 2019, have yet to materialise, leading to frustration among society members. The delay in obtaining clearances, which often involves navigating multiple departments, has posed a significant challenge for redevelopment projects, potentially prolonging the process for years. Despite recent announcements by the state government to expedite deemed conveyance for self-redevelopment projects, the lack of concrete proposals and implementation underscores the urgent need for a more efficient approval mechanism to support cooperative housing societies in their redevelopment endeavours.
