Demolition of Sadhu Vaswani Bridge Over Railway Tracks to Begin Next Week

19 Dec 2024

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will begin demolishing the portion of the Sadhu Vaswani bridge that passes over railway tracks next week. The work is expected to take one-and-a-half months, with demolition limited to two to three hours daily to accommodate train operations. In-principle approval from the Railways has been received, and the block schedule for train movement will be announced soon. The demolition, monitored by the Railways, will start once the schedule is finalized. PMC is replacing the old two-lane bridge, deemed unfit for heavy vehicles, with a new four-lane structure. Construction work on footings at the Koregaon Park end has already started, and 40% of the bridge not above railway tracks has been demolished.

Traffic has been diverted through alternative routes like Mangaldas Road, Bund Garden Road, and Inspection Bungalow Chowk, causing inconvenience to commuters and residents. The civic body has assured that all measures are being taken to avoid delays. Additionally, residents of shanties near the bridge have been relocated to Kharadi. PMC officials said the project, which began in April, aims to ease traffic congestion with a double-capacity bridge, and efforts are underway to complete the work as soon as possible.
