Groundwater levels across all 13 tehsils in the district experienced a significant decline in March, with Purandar, Shirur, and Baramati registering the most substantial depletion of up to one metre. According to a recent study by the Groundwater Surveys and Development Agency (GSDA), this marks the most severe groundwater depletion observed in the past four to five years.
Urgent measures such as mandating rainwater harvesting and repurposing defunct borewells are recommended to address this rapid decline. Additionally, experts emphasise the critical need to implement groundwater recharge systems, particularly in drought-prone areas like Purandar, to mitigate the impact of deficient rainfall and ensure self-sufficiency in water resources for agriculture and daily use.
