Environmental Activists Alarmed as Pune Riverfront Project Sparks Debris and Tree Controversy

14 Sep 2023

Environmental activists are voicing serious concerns about the indiscriminate dumping of construction debris along a 3.7km stretch of the Mula-Mutha river, from Bund Garden to Sangamwadi, a designated area for Pune Municipal Corporation's riverfront development project. The debris not only blankets the entire left bank of the river but also poses a significant threat to the local ecosystem. Trees are being uprooted, their roots are destabilized, and numerous plants and shrubs are dying due to this extensive dumping. What adds to the controversy is the apparent disregard for environmental regulations, as the PMC has been accused of planning to preemptively cut down trees without proper permissions, circumventing the directives of the National Green Tribunal.

Moreover, satellite imagery reveals that the canopies of these trees appear significantly smaller than they actually are, as they are buried deep within the debris, weakening them further. Additionally, the construction debris is contaminating the river, further exacerbating the environmental impact. Activists argue that this may serve as a precursor to the execution of the larger riverfront development project. While the PMC insists it has not violated any orders and will address the issue of debris, this situation underscores the larger challenge of balancing urban development with environmental preservation and raises questions about the responsible management of natural resources in cities.
