The Pimpri Chinchwad Housing Societies Federation (PCHSF) has issued a legal notice to the commissioner of the municipal corporation regarding the proposed garbage disposal site in Punawale. Residents of Punawale and neighboring areas are expressing dissatisfaction over the initiation of land acquisition for the second garbage depot, part of the Solid Waste Management Project (SWMP) at Kate Wasti Forest. The notice emphasizes that the project was conceived in 2008 when the region had sparse population and construction activity. Despite government approval in 2018, the current scenario reveals the presence of several housing societies and ongoing construction projects near the proposed site, leading the federation to assert that the municipal corporation should reconsider and identify a more distant location for the project.
According to the federation's legal representative, the proposed project in Punawale raises legal concerns as converting forest land into a dumping site contradicts various laws and poses a threat to the nearby environmental features. The federation urges the municipal corporation to adhere to legal provisions and residents' concerns, warning of potential legal action, including the filing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), if due considerations are not undertaken.
