Frequent Breakdowns of PMPML E-Buses Due to Charging Issues, New Charging Points Planned

09 Sep 2024

PMPML's electric buses are experiencing significant breakdowns, with charging issues causing 50% of the failures each month. E-buses, first acquired in 2019 and operated by private contractors, are struggling to complete their daily trips due to low or insufficient charge. In July alone, e-buses accounted for 800 breakdowns out of 1,607 total, similar to the numbers in May and June. PMPML plans to increase charging points at depots like Kothrud, Katraj, and Hinjawadi Phase-2, with new installations already underway at the Nigdi depot. The buses, which can run 200-225 km on a full charge, are facing challenges due to heavy traffic, continuous air conditioning use, and frequent door operations. Commuters and activists are calling for the rapid expansion of charging infrastructure at all depots and bus stops to prevent further trip cancellations.
