Over 200 residents from Sopanbaug, Udaybaug, BT Kawade Road, Hadapsar, and Ghorpadi staged a protest on Sunday against the severe air pollution and foul odor emanating from the Hadapsar garbage processing plant operated by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). The protesters, representing over 35 housing societies, also criticized the nearby trash processing unit managed by the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) for exacerbating health and hygiene issues in the area. Residents reported an alarming rise in respiratory illnesses, asthma, and other health complications due to the pollution, urging the relocation of these units. They demanded action from political candidates ahead of the upcoming assembly polls, warning that their votes would depend on resolving the issue.
The Hadapsar garbage plant, processing 200-250 tonnes of waste daily, has faced complaints for years, with residents alleging neglect by PMC and PCB. Protesters pointed out that while civic authorities approved development in the area, they failed to address the environmental and health concerns caused by the plants. Past promises by officials to investigate the matter have yielded no resolution, leaving residents frustrated and fearful for their well-being. The Residents' Forum of Udaybaug, Sopanbaug, and Ghorpadi, which organized the protest, emphasized the urgency of moving the plants to less populated zones to restore livability and health in the neighborhood.
