Hinjawadi’s IT Sector Growth Stunted by Long-Standing Infrastructure Issues

17 Nov 2024

Hinjawadi's Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, one of India's largest IT hubs with over 400 companies and more than 500,000 employees, is struggling with severe infrastructure challenges. Residents and employees have raised concerns about poor roads, water shortages, lack of public transport, waste management issues, and inadequate safety measures. Despite contributing nearly 60% of Maharashtra’s IT exports, the park remains neglected by policymakers, with overlapping jurisdictions of PMC, PCMC, PMRDA, MIDC, and local Gram Panchayats complicating development efforts. The upcoming assembly elections have reignited hopes that new leadership will prioritize solutions for these long-standing problems, including better traffic management, pedestrian infrastructure, and reliable amenities.

Political discussions have further highlighted the park's issues, with claims that inadequate infrastructure is driving companies to tier-2 cities like Nagpur and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. Local leaders and candidates have pledged to address these grievances, with some criticizing the neglect by past administrations. Residents argue that Pune risks losing its competitive edge to cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad, where governments invest heavily in infrastructure. With assembly polls approaching, Hinjawadi's residents and tech professionals are closely watching to see if their concerns will finally be addressed to secure the park’s future as a leading IT destination.
