Housing societies in Pimpri Chinchwad express concern over PCMC's directive to disconnect water supply to flat owners behind on property tax payments. The circular, based on a recent Bombay High Court ruling, prompts PCMC to issue notices to societies, warning of supply cutoff if dues aren't settled within three days. However, society representatives oppose the move, asserting water supply as a fundamental right, vowing to challenge the ruling if necessary.
PCMC reports 1.77 lakh property owners owing Rs 580 crore in unpaid property tax for the current financial year, with residential properties accounting for Rs 400 crore and slum areas Rs 100 crore. Despite revenue of Rs 860 crore collected against a target of Rs 1,000 crore, PCMC stands firm on enforcing the directive, emphasising the HC's authorization to disconnect water connections for tax defaulters. Yet, concerns linger among housing societies over the practicality and fairness of the measure, especially regarding resuming supply and bearing costs for reconnection services.
