The Nagar Road-Vadgaonsheri ward office recently carried out a comprehensive operation to address the issue of illegal hawkers in key areas within its jurisdiction. This move was prompted by persistent grievances from Viman Nagar residents who had long been troubled by the encroachment of illegal hawkers on sidewalks, leading to compromised pedestrian mobility and frequent traffic snarls. A senior official from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) clarified that the hawkers removed were operating without licences or had violated their licensed areas. The action was part of routine efforts to uphold order and compliance in these areas. While residents welcomed this initiative, they also urged the PMC to ensure that the displaced hawkers are provided with alternative spaces to carry out their businesses, emphasising the importance of protecting their livelihoods.
Despite the positive step taken by the PMC, residents believe that more work remains to be done. Concerns were raised about the presence of remaining hawkers, especially vegetable vendors who occupy footpaths early in the morning, causing inconvenience to pedestrians. Additionally, residents emphasised the need for continued efforts to clear key areas like Datta Mandir and Ganapati Mandir chowks to prevent ongoing traffic congestion. The operation to remove illegal hawkers was a significant step towards addressing the issue, but residents are hopeful that further actions will help maintain order and enhance the overall quality of life in these areas.
