Karve Nagar Residents Protest Premature Opening of Bridge Demand Completion of DP Road First

03 Feb 2025

Over 1,200 Karve Nagar residents staged a protest on Sunday, forming a human chain near Dudhane Lawns to oppose the civic body's decision to open a nearly completed bridge connecting Suncity on Sinhagad Road to their locality. The protestors, under the banner of Karvenagar Sanghatit Society Manch, demanded that the bridge should not be opened for traffic until the Development Plan (DP) Road in the area is fully completed. They argued that opening the bridge without the DP Road would worsen congestion in an already traffic-heavy locality. While a portion of the DP Road from Rajaram Bridge to Mhatre Pul is operational, the entire stretch up to Babasaheb Ambedkar Chowk in Warje remains incomplete, a demand pending for nearly two decades. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials assured the protesters that land acquisition for the DP Road is in progress, and efforts are being made to complete it at the earliest.

Residents expressed concerns that opening the bridge prematurely would divert heavy traffic into Karvenagar’s narrow bylanes, leading to severe bottlenecks. The finished part of the DP Road has already become a hub for food joints and wedding venues, causing congestion, especially during peak hours. Protesters emphasized that the civic administration must ensure the completion of the DP Road before making the bridge operational. Meanwhile, PMC officials have initiated road widening measures to ease congestion, including a demolition drive on Panand Road, removing encroachments near Siddhivinayak College and Cummins College to improve traffic flow. However, residents remain firm on their demand for a long-term traffic solution before allowing the new bridge to open.
