Residents of Kothrud complained about receiving polluted drinking water from their taps on Friday, following a water supply cut by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) the previous day. Locals reported that the water was muddy and had a foul odour, raising concerns about possible contamination with sewage. The water cut had been implemented to facilitate repair and maintenance work at various water supply units, including the main distribution plant at Parvati, and the supply resumed on Friday morning at low pressure. However, some areas experienced delayed or no supply, while others reported receiving polluted water, prompting residents to demand urgent action from PMC.
Civic officials explained that dirt collected in the pipes during the shutdown could have caused the contamination when supply resumed. They assured residents that inspections would be carried out and the issue resolved promptly. The delayed repair work at the Gandhi Bhavan tank, which supplies water to Mahatma Society and surrounding areas, was also cited as a reason for the disruptions. PMC advised citizens to purify the water before use, acknowledging the risk to health, especially for senior citizens and children, and stated that a team would investigate further if problems persisted.
