The district collector has approved a 0.65-hectare plot for a 220kV substation in Baner-Balewadi after years of delays, aiming to ease the load on existing substations at NCL and Hinjewadi, which currently serve over 1.5 lakh consumers. Frequent power outages and voltage fluctuations during summer and rainy seasons have plagued residents in Baner, Balewadi, Sus, and Mahalunge due to overloaded facilities, as highlighted in previous reports. The substation was initially sanctioned two years ago, but the project stalled due to a lack of land allocation, with previous sites being repurposed for a Covid-19 care center and a PMPML bus station.
The new Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) at Sai Chowk will feature two 100 MVA transformers with 13 outgoing feeders, expected to benefit the area for the next 15-20 years. The electricity department anticipates the project will be completed within two years, following the necessary approvals and processes. Local residents, who have long campaigned against power issues and documented frequent outages, view the substation as an urgent solution to the ongoing power challenges.
