Massive Protest by Over 200 Citizens Demanding Improved Civic Amenities

10 Aug 2023

Residents from various neighbourhoods, including Kharadi, Baner, Balewadi, and Kothrud, participated in the "Chalo PMC" protest, demanding urgent attention to the city's deteriorating civic amenities. Around 200 citizens gathered outside the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) building, collectively voicing their concerns. The main issues raised encompassed garbage collection, traffic congestion, potholes, electricity fluctuations, water supply problems, and inefficient waste management. Criticism was also directed at the riverfront development (RFD) project and the indiscriminate cutting of trees, highlighting the need for sustainable urban planning. Citizens from diverse age groups united in the protest, emphasising the collective impact of their grievances compared to individual efforts.

Amid the peaceful demonstration, a brief altercation ensued between a citizen and members of the Congress party, momentarily overshadowing the protest's non-political nature. Post-protest, residents aimed to engage with authorities, awaiting an audience with the commissioner. Ultimately, the additional municipal commissioner of PMC met with the protesters and acknowledged their concerns. The demands put forth included a request for a town hall meeting to address citizen problems and the appointment of a designated contact person to liaise with PMC, ensuring accountability for issues. This protest underscored citizens' determination to see positive changes in Pune's civic infrastructure and the environment, reflecting a collective drive for improved living conditions.
