Metro Pillar on Baner Road Causes Major Traffic Bottleneck, Residents and Police Seek Urgent PMRDA Action

06 Nov 2024

A Metro pillar positioned in front of Hotel Mahabaleshwar on Baner Road has become a major bottleneck for daily commuters, as it narrows the roadway to a single lane, causing frequent traffic jams. The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has constructed two pillars for the Shivajinagar-Hinjawadi Metro line, with one located in the middle of the road and the other near the Ram Nadi riverbank. Local residents have expressed frustration, stating that the pillar obstructs vehicle movement, particularly during peak hours, and have called for traffic authorities to intervene.

In response to a wave of complaints, Pune traffic police conducted a study and wrote to PMRDA officials, urging a solution. PMRDA clarified that the pillar placement was necessary to avoid encroachment on the riverbank and accommodate existing utility lines, making relocation challenging. The reduced carriage width—from 12 meters to just 7.5 meters—has sparked concerns from both police and residents, as the congestion poses a risk to long-term traffic mobility in the area.
