Despite Pune Metro’s Vanaz–Ramwadi and PCMC–Swargate routes being operational, daily ridership has plateaued between 1.5 and 1.6 lakh over the past four months. February saw an average of 1.53 lakh commuters daily, while March dropped slightly to 1.44 lakh. Regular commuters and officials attribute this stagnation to the delay in expanding the Metro network. Without phase-wise extensions, such as the much-anticipated Ramwadi to Wagholi and Vanaz to Chandni Chowk routes, the system fails to serve high-demand areas like Nagar Road and Kharadi, limiting its appeal for wider usage.
The proposed extensions, approved by the state government in March 2024, are still awaiting the Centre’s nod. Maha Metro and civic officials are ready to proceed, while MP Muralidhar Mohol has assured that the clearances are in their final stages. However, delays in approvals could postpone completion by three to four years, frustrating daily commuters who rely on a seamless transport system. Despite PMC operating without elected representatives for the past three years, the administration has pushed necessary approvals, ensuring readiness for implementation once central permissions are received.
