Metro Work and Traffic Chaos Double Commute Time on Key Pune Stretch

28 Aug 2024

Commuters are facing significant delays on the 2.5km stretch between Shimla Office Chowk and Pune railway station, with travel times more than doubling due to traffic diversions, road conditions, and ongoing Metro construction. What typically took 5-10 minutes now requires at least 20 minutes. Key junctions near Shimla Office, Sancheti Hospital, and RTO are experiencing severe traffic snarls, exacerbated by Metro work and poorly maintained roads, including large potholes near RTO Chowk. Commuters have expressed frustration over the extended travel times and the lack of effective traffic management, with wardens struggling to maintain smooth traffic flow.

Additionally, the situation is worsened by traffic violations such as motorcyclists ignoring one-way rules, and pedestrians feeling overlooked due to construction material occupying footpaths. The local MLA has been monitoring the progress of the Metro work, which is expected to be completed by November 2025. Meanwhile, the traffic police plan to open road stretches in phases, with recent improvements seen on University Road. However, commuters continue to demand better planning and quicker completion of the work to alleviate the daily congestion.
