Global tech giant Microsoft has invested around Rs 1,000 crore to acquire two land parcels in Hinjawadi, Pune, over the past two months, aiming to expand its data centre operations in India. The company purchased 16.4 acres in August and another 16 acres last week, with plans to establish data centres on these sites. This marks Microsoft's third land acquisition in Pune, following a 25-acre purchase in Pimpri Chinchwad in 2022. The company, which also operates data centres in Chinchwad and Hyderabad, is expected to employ nearly 300 staffers by the end of 2026 across its Indian facilities.
The growing demand for data centres in India, driven by increasing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud services, is expected to add 791 MW of capacity by 2026, according to a JLL report. This expansion will require 1 crore square feet of real estate space and attract investments worth Rs 48,000 crore ($5.7 billion). As the demand for computing power rises, tech firms like Microsoft are increasingly expanding their presence in India to meet the growing need for data storage and infrastructure solutions.
