The state climate action cell, in collaboration with the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), and city-based NGO has initiated efforts to address industrial pollution in the Indrayani river. A pilot project, launched on June 28, aims to abate pollution in the Pawana-Indrayani river stretch, focusing on a 16km section from Dehu. The MIDC will conduct a survey and prepare a detailed plan on pollution sources, while the project will include measures like setting up effluent plants and electroplating facilities, and planting bamboo near the riverbed to prevent soil erosion. Additionally, efforts will be made to conserve the habitat of the Mahseer fish, a culturally significant species.
The project is based on a four-point plan developed by the Ram-Mula Rejuvenation and Management Committee and will be implemented post-assembly elections. It aims to regulate streams carrying pollutants and utilize bioremediation methods to restore the river's health without altering its natural banks. There is also a proposal to establish a river regulatory authority for Indrayani that will include government and non-government representatives, ensuring an integrated and inclusive approach to river conservation.
