MoD Committee Discusses Potential Excision of Civil Areas from Pune Cantonment

11 Mar 2024

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has initiated discussions regarding the potential excision of civil areas from Pune Cantonment, with a committee chaired by the ministry's joint secretary overseeing the process. This committee, which convened on February 12 in New Delhi and subsequently via video conferencing on March 4, included representatives from the Directorate General of Defence Estates (DGDE) and Pune Cantonment Board (PCB). During these meetings, emphasis was placed on the importance of maintaining FSI (Floor Space Index) restrictions to address security concerns associated with commercial development in these areas.

According to a draft proposal submitted by the PCB's chief executive officer (CEO) to the Maharashtra chief secretary, civil areas such as Sadar Bazar, Ghorpadi Bazar, and Wanowrie Bazar have been identified for potential merger with Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) areas. These areas, spanning a total of 236.48 acres, are integral parts of Pune Cantonment, with Sadar Bazar being the largest and most commercially vibrant among them. Despite repeated attempts to seek comments from relevant authorities, including the PCB president and CEO, there has been no response on the matter as of the time of reporting.
