The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has issued a show-cause notice to the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) for the underperformance of its Common Sewage Treatment Plant (CSTP) in Rajiv Gandhi IT Park, Hinjewadi. The notice, sent to the executive engineer of the MIDC’s IT division, questions why the board should not seize the corporation’s bank guarantee for non-compliance with sewage treatment norms. MIDC has been granted a day to respond and is required to attend a physical hearing on November 22. The MPCB’s action follows a fish kill incident reported in September due to pollution in the Mula River, which was linked to issues at the CSTP in Hinjewadi, where multiple visits revealed operational shortcomings, including underutilization of the plant's capacity.
During inspections, MPCB officials observed that nearly all CSTP units were non-operational, resulting in a severe odour from stagnant, septic tanks. Additionally, the CSTP lacks a disinfection system, and only a limited amount of treated water is being transported daily, with the rest of the partially treated water being discharged into the Mula River. Broken drainage lines were also found near the CSTP’s entry gate, causing wastewater to flow into stormwater drains. Further concerns arose as samples collected from the CSTP appeared discoloured, suggesting incomplete treatment. MPCB cited MIDC’s failure to meet compliance conditions, noting that the required ₹35 lakh bank guarantee had not been submitted, which has contributed to ongoing pollution in the surrounding area.
