MSRDC Proposes Addition of Two Lanes to Pune-Mumbai Expressway for Improved Traffic Flow, Seeks Central Approval

05 Aug 2023

The state government has proposed a comprehensive solution to tackle the persistent traffic congestion on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway. Their strategy involves the construction of an additional lane on both sides of the road, as suggested by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRDC) in a plan submitted to the central government. With land acquisition already in progress, the forthcoming expansion project, encompassing the integration of tunnels and flyovers, is anticipated to require an estimated budget of Rs 4,500 Crore. This initiative is a response to the recurrent and lengthy traffic jams that commuters have been facing on the expressway, exacerbated by monsoon-triggered landslides. The effectiveness of prior attempts by highway authorities to alleviate congestion has been limited, prompting further measures to be proposed. These include the enhancement of the old Pune-Mumbai Highway through the addition of supplementary lanes and the development of 11 flyovers strategically positioned to counteract traffic bottlenecks along the route.
