Mundhwa Chowk to See Traffic Diversions Amid Peak Hour Woes

16 Apr 2025

In a bid to tackle severe traffic congestion at Mundhwa chowk, the Pune traffic police and civic authorities have decided to implement vehicle diversions on an experimental basis. The busy junction, which connects key routes from Kharadi bypass, Mundhwa goan, Magarpatta, and Ghorpadi, witnesses long queues and erratic driving behaviors, including wrong-side travel and two-wheelers taking to footpaths. To streamline the flow, officials plan to restrict right turns and instead introduce U-turns, aiming to make the junction signal-free for smoother movement. These changes will be rolled out in phases over the coming days and remain in place for two weeks initially.

However, residents and daily commuters have expressed concerns about the new traffic plan, fearing it may increase travel time and lead to further inconvenience. Many pointed out that a similar diversion tried recently was ineffective due to insufficient space for U-turns and heavy vehicle volume. Citizens have criticized the Pune Municipal Corporation for not providing long-term solutions like constructing a flyover at Mundhwa chowk or building a bridge connecting Kharadi and Mundhwa. They also suggested practical measures like introducing free left turns and widening the junction to ease bottlenecks.
