New Metro Extensions Approved for Warje, Hadapsar, and Khadakwasla

19 Aug 2023

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has given the green light to extension proposals that will bring areas like Khadakwasla, Hadapsar, and Warje under the city's Metro network in the coming years. MahaMetro submitted detailed project reports (DPRs) for these extension routes in January 2023. Among the proposed routes are Kharadi-Hadapsar-Swargate-Khadakwasla, Paud Phata to Warje, Ramwadi to Wagholi, and Vanaz to Chandni Chowk. The civic administration's approval marks the initial step towards expanding Metro services to these localities, benefiting residents and improving connectivity to core areas.

The PMC has engaged in discussions with MahaMetro regarding the DPRs and has sent the proposals back with recommendations. These proposals will subsequently be submitted to the state government for consideration. Alongside this, discussions between MahaMetro and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) are set to take place concerning a common Metro stretch on Solapur Road. While the process involves technical evaluations at various levels, final approval is expected to take some time. The estimated cost of these extensions is around Rs12,000 crore, with funding shared among the state, central government, PMC, and financial institutions. However, civic activists have emphasised the need for expediting the approval process, considering that ongoing Metro stretches have taken several years to become operational. The extension to new areas is projected to take an additional six to seven years.
