The National Green Tribunal (NGT) bench in Pune has directed the public works department (PWD) to complete the concreting and repair of the Wagholi-Bhavdi-Lonikand Road within three months to address dust pollution caused by heavy vehicles traveling to stone crushing units and quarries in the area. The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has also been instructed to implement recommendations outlined in its action taken report (ATR) to control air pollution during this period. The case, initiated suo motu by the NGT, highlighted unregulated truck movements that have led to severe dust pollution and damaged roads. The MPCB’s air quality monitoring earlier this year revealed dangerously high levels of particulate matter, significantly exceeding national ambient air quality standards.
The PWD noted that the 11.8-km road has been extensively damaged by heavy vehicle traffic, while local authorities have taken enforcement actions, fining over 2,200 heavy vehicles for violating movement bans during restricted hours. The NGT emphasized the need for the Stone Crushers Association to clean roads regularly and use water sprinkling to reduce dust emissions. Additionally, it instructed MPCB to conduct periodic inspections to ensure air pollution levels are controlled, with measures such as road repairs, cleaning with hydraulic broomers, and improved dust control during transportation being key steps toward resolving the issue.
