Residents of Nyati Elysia society in Kharadi are facing a severe health crisis after allegedly receiving contaminated water from a sewage treatment plant (STP) through a private tanker supplier. Over the past three months, 80% of residents have reported illnesses like stomach infections, diarrhea, and fever. A Zoom meeting between residents, the builder, and the supplier revealed that the supplier admitted to sourcing untreated water but continued the practice, endangering hundreds of families. Following complaints, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) confirmed the use of STP water and has initiated action against the vendor. The residents, supported by the local MLA, are demanding stricter regulations, additional PMC water lines, and an investigation into similar incidents in other societies.
The situation escalated on December 20 when the vendor obstructed water deliveries by blocking the society’s entry point with tankers, forcing police intervention. Nyati Elysia residents have formally urged the Kharadi Housing Society Welfare Association to hold the vendor accountable, prevent further incidents, and implement stricter audits on STP water usage. The PMC has assured measures to monitor STP water and reduce dependency on private tankers, but residents demand faster action and stricter oversight to prevent future risks. This incident highlights the urgent need for better regulation of private water suppliers to protect public health in Pune.
