The timeline to rejuvenate the Pavana river, set in 2019, has expired without achieving its objectives, according to a report by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT). Initially categorized under ‘priority II’ in 2018 due to high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) levels, the stretch of Pavana river from Dapodi to Ravet has now worsened to ‘priority I,’ indicating severe pollution with BOD levels exceeding 30 mg per litre. The CPCB report criticized the lack of progress, highlighting delays in implementing the 2019 action plan, which included upgrading sewage treatment plants (STPs), waste management, and water quality restoration. The board urged the Maharashtra government to ensure the river rejuvenation committee conducts regular reviews and implements the action plan effectively.
The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), in its affidavit, stated that ongoing sewage treatment and waste management projects near the Pavana river are expected to be completed by December 2027, with funding of over ₹1,600 crore sought for these initiatives. Meanwhile, the CPCB has recommended immediate measures such as prohibiting raw sewage discharge, installing nallah clean-up mechanisms, conducting awareness campaigns, and setting up an online water quality monitoring system. The failure to meet previous deadlines underscores the urgent need for stricter implementation and monitoring to address the worsening pollution levels in the Pavana river.
