Over the weekend, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) officials from the water supply and health departments responded to reports of severe stomach infections among residents of a cooperative housing society in Chikhali. Around 30 residents, mostly children, were treated at private clinics over the past 10-15 days. Concerned society members approached the municipal corporation, suspecting a viral outbreak or water contamination. PCMC officials collected water samples on Saturday and suggested cleaning the water tank. While initial water tests showed no contamination, stool samples were also collected from affected children. The society has since cleaned the water tanks and advised residents to drink boiled water
A senior PCMC official noted that all affected residents are now fine and await lab results to confirm any water issues. The illnesses seem linked to an unclean water tank, as neighbouring societies did not report similar problems. The society's secretary confirmed that water tanks are cleaned every three months and reassured that the PCMC's instant water tests found no contamination. The health department's ongoing investigation will provide further clarity on the situation.
