PCMC to Demolish 29 Illegal Bungalows in Indrayani Floodline by December

03 Dec 2024

The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is set to demolish 29 bungalows built within the blue floodline of the Indrayani River in Chikhali, following a directive from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to complete the process by December. The NGT had ordered the demolition in July, citing violations of environmental norms, and imposed a ₹5 crore fine on the bungalow owners. While the owners had appealed to the Supreme Court, the apex court dismissed their plea, clearing the way for PCMC to proceed. Final notices have been served to the owners, and standard hearings were conducted before initiating action. The demolition will ensure compliance with the NGT order, which is no longer pending in court.

Beyond these bungalows, PCMC is expected to resume action against illegal structures in blue floodline areas across the city. A recent survey identified 2,534 structures, including 1,393 residential and 1,118 commercial properties, built in violation of floodline norms. While 27 structures were demolished in September, the drive was paused due to protests. Activists have pointed out that several constructions approved by the civic body before the 2009 floodline demarcation by the irrigation department still remain. Political leaders have also promised solutions to address the broader issue of blue line constructions during recent campaigns.
