The environment status report of 2022-23 issued by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation highlights a concerning trend – the escalating number of vehicles is set to worsen the traffic situation. The data reveals a substantial surge in vehicle registrations, with the count rising from 97,213 in 2020-21 to 1,07,420 in 2021-22. Unfortunately, the report indicates a lack of progress on the environmental front, as the majority of vehicles (72%) still run on petrol, with a mere 2% being electric vehicles. Although there has been a slight increase in the adoption of electric vehicles, it remains insufficient to counterbalance the growing environmental impact. Moreover, CNG consumption, which previously dropped in 2020-21, has now rebounded.
Amidst these concerns, activists are advocating for a comprehensive approach to tackle vehicular pollution. They emphasise the urgent need for a revamped public transport system and improved last mile connectivity to incentivize more people to opt for public transportation. Furthermore, limiting the registration of new private vehicles is deemed necessary to address emissions, reduce pollution, alleviate traffic congestion, and minimise travel time. All stakeholders, including citizens and the government, are urged to join forces in reducing the carbon footprint and promoting sustainable transportation alternatives. Ultimately, this entails not only enhancing public transport infrastructure but also actively encouraging a shift away from the reliance on private vehicles to mitigate the detrimental impact on the environment and overall urban mobility.
