The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a warning to residents in flood-prone areas to be prepared for possible relocation after heavy rainfall led to water entering homes in localities like Ekta Nagari on Sinhagad Road, Khilare Vasti in Karve Nagar, and Pulachiwadi in Deccan. With over 35,000 cusecs of water discharged from Khadakwasla dam, and the possibility of further increases, the PMC is ready to move up to 5,000 people if conditions worsen. Though the situation is not yet dire, residents have begun to move their belongings, and riverside roads have been closed due to rising water levels.
In response to the threat of flooding, the civic administration has taken several precautionary measures, including distributing handouts to alert residents about potential evacuation and setting up a public announcement system to provide updates on water discharge and possible flash floods. This follows a similar situation at the end of July when PMC had to evacuate 2,655 people from 18 locations across the city. With 39 identified flood-prone areas and 41 municipal schools prepared to serve as temporary shelters, the PMC, alongside the Army and National Disaster Response Force, is on high alert to manage the situation and protect the affected communities.
