PMC Ambitious Five Lakes Beautification Plan Promises a Greener and Cleaner Pune

03 Sep 2023

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has received official approval to embark on an ambitious environmental and urban beautification project known as the "PMC Five Lakes Beautification Plan" in Pune. This comprehensive initiative aims to enhance and beautify five prominent lakes, including Jambhulwadi, two lakes at Katraj, Pashan, and an additional lake. Recent environmental concerns, such as the distressing sight of dead fish in Jambhulwadi Lake, have underscored the urgency of this project. To mitigate potential hazards, sewage treatment plants will be installed at the upper regions of each lake, preventing sewage contamination and safeguarding local ecosystems. Additionally, measures will be taken to control the growth of invasive aquatic plants like hyacinths, which can adversely affect local flora and fauna. Despite previous delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, PMC is determined to move forward, leveraging the current budget and available resources for the betterment of Pune's lakes.

The PMC's Five Lakes Beautification Plan not only focuses on aesthetic improvements but also prioritises sustainable development and conservation. By addressing environmental issues and enhancing these lakes, PMC seeks to improve the overall quality of life for its residents while ensuring the preservation of natural resources for future generations. This initiative reflects the municipality's commitment to creating a more environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing urban landscape in Pune, thereby fostering a healthier and more sustainable city for its citizens.
