PMC Announces Road Maintenance Drive Amid Concerns Over Uneven Chamber Lids

14 Mar 2024

Two-wheeler riders in Pune have expressed concerns about uneven and sunken chamber lids on roads, which pose a risk of accidents by causing them to lose balance and fall. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced plans to conduct a city-wide drive to level road chambers and carry out maintenance work before the onset of the monsoon. The PMC has allocated Rs 10 crore for repairs and maintenance, with mobile maintenance vans and teams from the road department assigned to the task. However, civic activists have raised doubts about the quality of repairs, emphasising the need for independent and continuous reviews to ensure the effectiveness of the maintenance efforts.

Residents and commuters have highlighted instances of uneven chamber lids on various roads, causing inconvenience and safety hazards for two-wheeler riders. Concerns have been raised about the substandard quality of road repairs despite significant expenditure by the PMC. Additionally, residents have called for stricter enforcement measures, such as imposing hefty fines on contractors for inadequate reinstatement of roads. Urgent attention is needed to address the poor condition of chamber lids, especially on roads undergoing Metro and flyover construction works, to prevent potential accidents and ensure road safety for all commuters.
