The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has urged citizens to report any residential properties being used for commercial purposes. However, the response to their appeal has been lacklustre, with only 73 properties identified for illegal commercial activities in housing societies, despite an estimated 50,000 such properties within PMC's jurisdiction. To tackle this issue, the civic body has set up a war room to detect irregularities and take appropriate action. PMC plans to impose additional taxes on owners of residential properties found to be used for commercial purposes, but initially, the administration had called for voluntary declarations, which yielded no results. As a result, additional property taxes will now be charged on both occupants and property owners. The circular issued by the civic commissioner emphasises that defaulters will face three times the property charges as per legal provisions for unauthorised commercial usage. Several establishments, such as food joints, restaurants, hotels, bars, and pubs, are operating without proper clearances, flouting norms, and creating disturbances by staying open until late at night. PMC is also collaborating with the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited to identify illegal property usage based on data from commercial electricity metres. Activists have called for a more effective system to identify offenders, while also urging the administration to prioritise action against prominent tax defaulters to recover substantial dues.
