The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), in collaboration with the Building Development Department, conducted a comprehensive two-day operation to dismantle unauthorised tin sheds spanning 18,000 square feet in Viman Nagar. Targeting 76 properties, the crackdown focused on removing unapproved sheds erected in front and on the sides of vacant plots and buildings in the Viman Nagar area. Led by PMC’s Deputy Commissioner (Zone 1) and officials from various departments, the operation faced resistance from encroachers, prompting a robust police presence to ensure continuous action. Preemptive measures by some businesses and attempts to relocate unapproved stalls using cranes were observed. Further actions are planned, including crackdowns on unauthorised rooftop hotels and additional encroachments in the upcoming week.
Local vendors, claiming decades of operation with valid licences, expressed distress over sudden relocation orders. Activists viewed the PMC's actions as a response to a High Court order, while concerns were raised about the impact on public livelihoods and potential gas explosions near generators. Despite these challenges, the PMC remains steadfast in addressing unauthorised encroachments in line with legal and regulatory directives.
