The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) conducted an anti-encroachment drive on Friday, demolishing 11 illegal structures covering 90,000 sq ft along the Pashan highway. These structures included extensions of showrooms and food joints. A senior official from the PMC's building permission department stated that notices had been issued to these properties and that repeat offenders would face legal action. The demolished shops were located in restricted zones of the High Explosive Materials Research Limited (HEMRL). This action follows a similar drive in March, where 20 showrooms covering around 3 lakh sq ft were removed.
According to PMC data, the civic administration received complaints from HEMRL about these unauthorised properties. A special drive in November 2023 had already resulted in the demolition of illegal constructions spread over one lakh sq ft. Some shopkeepers had temporarily halted the demolition process by appealing to the Bombay High Court and later the Supreme Court. A PMC official emphasised that the ongoing actions against unauthorised structures aim to prevent potential accidents and ensure public safety in different parts of the city.
