PMC Demolishes MSEDCL Building for Ganeshkhind Road Widening

28 Mar 2024

In an overnight move, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) took action to demolish a building belonging to the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) near Senapati Bapat Road as part of the Ganeshkhind Road widening project. The initiative aims to alleviate traffic congestion in the area, with the PMC road department emphasising the necessity of acquiring properties to facilitate the road expansion. Upon demolition, approximately 6,500 square feet of space will be made available for widening the road near the Senapati Bapat Road and Ganeshkhind Road junction, enabling the stretch's expansion from 36 metres to 45 metres.

However, the project has raised concerns among environmentalists and citizens alike, with objections raised over the proposed axing of 105 trees and transplantation of 87 others to accommodate the road widening. Some citizens have urged the PMC to consider additional factors such as future changes in public transport infrastructure before proceeding with the expansion. A petition filed in court by concerned citizens highlights the lack of provisions for amenities like footpaths or cycle tracks in the proposed project, calling for a more comprehensive approach to urban development and infrastructure planning.
