An RTI query has unveiled a concerning trend in Pune, revealing that more than 1,700 property owners collectively owe over Rs 5,000 crore in outstanding dues, with each owner having dues of Rs 1 crore or more. The data also highlights that nearly 94 property owners have resorted to legal action against dues amounting to Rs 988 crore, a substantial portion of which is owed by two owners totaling Rs 565 crore. Additionally, revenue from mobile towers stands at Rs 2,427 crore, emphasising the significant financial stakes involved.
In response to these revelations, members of Sajag Nagrik Manch, a citizens' group, have urged the Pune Municipal Corporation to take swift action against defaulting property owners. Despite the administration's efforts, including employing a music band to address smaller dues, concerns persist regarding the focus on larger tax defaulters. PMC officials have assured that a special drive has been initiated to seal properties belonging to major tax defaulters, and if necessary, the civic body will resort to auctioning the properties through an online bidding process to recover the outstanding dues.
