The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced a reduction in road digging activities for the upcoming fiscal year 2024-25, citing completion of major road works in core city areas in recent years. According to PMC officials, the number of applications to lay cables has decreased compared to previous years, with permission granted for digging approximately 81 km of roads during the 2023–24 financial year. However, concerns have been raised regarding the quality of road repairs, especially in light of heavy monsoon seasons in 2022 and 2023, which exposed numerous potholes across the city. Citizens and activists emphasise the importance of adhering to quality standards in road construction and repairs, urging better coordination between agencies involved in road maintenance.
PMC has set an earlier deadline for pre-monsoon road digging and restoration in 2024, aiming to complete the works before April 30 instead of the usual deadline of May 31. This decision aims to address pothole-related issues more effectively during the rainy season. However, recent instances of fines imposed on contractors for unauthorised road digging highlight the need for stricter enforcement of regulations. Despite efforts to minimise disruptions caused by road works, ensuring accountability and adherence to standards remains crucial for maintaining the city's road infrastructure.
