The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has embarked on a significant endeavour to mitigate flood risks within the city by initiating the construction of retaining walls along nullahs and water streams. This proactive measure aims to alleviate the perennial concerns faced by residents residing in flood-prone areas, with a substantial allocation of Rs 200 crore from the state government bolstering the initiative. With memories of the severe flooding experienced in 2019 still fresh, PMC officials underscore the pressing need to address these vulnerabilities and ensure the safety of properties situated near water bodies.
Identified areas across Sinhagad Road, Satara Road, Sahakarnagar, Bibvewadi, Ambegaon, Katraj, and Kondhwa have been earmarked for the construction of these vital retaining walls. In tandem with this effort, the PMC is actively pursuing various infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the city's resilience against flooding. Initiatives such as the redevelopment of Ambil Odha and the forthcoming opening of a flyover near Sinhagad Road reflect the PMC's commitment to bolstering flood management capabilities. With ongoing projects including road widening and railway overbridge construction, the PMC remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard the well-being of Pune's residents amidst the challenges posed by inclement weather.
